Frequently asked questions about Finesse electric radiators (FAQ)

Do I need any special wiring?

No. Existing wiring, for the basic system, as long as it has been correctly installed, is all that’s required. It’s beneficial that the radiators are located within just under a metre (3ft) of an existing socket in order to reduce costs.

Can I plug them into any 13A socket?

Yes, again, as long as the wiring has been correctly installed then that’s fine.

How long is the radiator flex?

1 metre (3ft).

Can they replace my existing night-storage heaters and use the same wiring?

Yes. In fact the wiring put in for the night-storage heaters is perfect for Finesse radiators. Also with the removal of the storage heater you get back room space due to the smaller footprint of the radiator and the fact that it’s mounted on the wall.

Do they take long to install?

A single radiator can usually be mounted, connected and working inside an hour to an existing socket outlet. An average 3–bedroom house, using existing sockets, is usually completed – full central heating – up and running in a day!

How long do they take to heat up?

Ten minutes from cold to maximum working temperature – around 80°C, dropping to around 50°C or less working temperature.

Are they the same as storage heaters?

No. They do not store any heat nor do they retain heat like storage heaters. They have a very quick response time of around 10 minutes and are consequently much more controllable.

Are they cheaper to run than night-store heaters?

Yes - Considerably! These heaters are around ⅔ of the running costs of night-store heaters for the same heat output. This means that a 2400w storage heater can be replaced with a 1600w Finesse radiator. Also, integral electronics give superior control over the heating cycle making them much more responsive as well as efficient.

How is the room/radiator temperature set?

Each radiator has a temperature-setting dial. Once the room temperature has reached the target set on the dial then the radiator turns off.

Are the controls always located on the bottom right?

No. The heater can be mounted with left-hand or right-hand controls.

Can I run them on ‘Economy 7’ tariff?

Yes of course, but theses radiators are responsive heaters not storage heaters. This means that they require power to be available 24hrs per day – if you’re cold at any time you want to be able to turn them on and have heat within 10 minutes or so. Most economy tariffs turn off during peak times and thereby limit your usage.

Can I run them using a time clock?

Yes. But this is just one of several ways to run and control the radiators.

Can I zone them or control all of them together?

Yes. We have a system that turns all of the radiators on/off from a single time clock but you can still turn them on/off locally. No extra wiring is required as it’s done using existing mains wiring to carry the control signals.

Can I take them with me if I move house?

Yes of course, simply disconnect and remove from the wall brackets.

Are they freestanding or are they mounted on the wall?

They are independent of all other radiators but must be wall-mounted.

What’s the delivery or lead-time?

Usually next day but certainly within a couple of working days.

Can they be installed in a bathroom or en-suite?

Yes. They can be installed in either room as long as current regulations (BS 7671 - 17th Edition of the wiring regulations) are adhered to.

Are they guaranteed?

Yes, of course. 10-years warranty and 2-years on all of the electric parts.

Are there grants available?

Unfortunately not.

Do I need a boiler?

No. The radiators are independent and no kind of boiler is necessary.

Do I need to have them serviced annually or maintained?

No. They do not require any expensive maintenance or yearly service contracts as in gas/oil systems.

Can I just have one radiator?

Yes, of course. In fact they are perfect if you’ve got a loft conversion or you’ve had a conservatory or an extension built and you can’t or don’t want to extend your existing wet radiator system.

Why are Finesse electric radiators so good for conservatories?

Recently introduced building regulations won’t allow the existing wet central heating system to be extended into a conservatory. These radiators are therefore the perfect answer. They come in a 300mm height version that is just right for fitting to a conservatory dwarf wall. It also gives the option of using the conservatory throughout the year and not just during the summer months.

Who works out how big the radiators need to be?

You can do it yourself if you want to or you can employ someone to do it for you. However, we are very experienced in this field and would be happy to calculate the room heat losses involved either from information supplied or we can make a site visit and take care of everything for you.

Is there a charge for a site visit?

Normally no, this is a free service.
